Here’s a wonderful old piece of hand beaded folk art for sale on, a ceremonial diviner’s sash, made by the Yoruba People in Nigeria, Africa. It is hand sewn with glass beads and cowrie shells. It’s 47″ long plus 2″ in the loop at the top. It’s about 5″ wide. Images are a bird, 2 snakes, a crocodile, and 2 faces or masks with horns and vertical scarification marks. Eyes and noses must be padded underneath as they are more 3 dimensional. We purchased this piece about 25 years ago from a gallery that featured primitive arts and crafts. It’s a great looking piece that we’ve enjoyed owning but it is time to pass it on for someone else to enjoy.

Some of the cowrie shells are dyed or painted blue. One cowrie shell is missing – 4th from top on the right. Three or four of the shells have a piece missing from them. White beads are more sparse in the bottom section… we bought it this way but possibly some beads were broken long ago or threads have stretched over time. The old tan material on which it is made has some frayed areas along the edges. The back has variations in the color… mostly tan, but some darker brown and a lot of lighter circles and dots. It is in very good vintage condition with exceptions noted above.
