Hand Carved Ironwood Seal Native American Seri Tribe Sonoran Desert Folk Art 11"
Hand carved ironwood seal made by the Seri tribe (they call themselves Comcaac) from the Sonoran desert area in Arizona and Mexico. The seal is polished and sleek with the base left as natural rough wood to represent a rock. There are a couple of tight check lines in the wood from the natural drying and shrinking that all wood goes through as it ages which I mention for accuracy but they are minimal and hardly noticeable. It is a beautiful sculpture in very good condition. Very large and heavy... 11-5/8" high and about 7" x 5.5" at the base. It weighs 7 lbs before packaging.
There is a limited amount of ironwood available as the harvesting of native trees has been prohibited by the government. The artisans are limited to the wood they can find from naturally fallen trees. There are only a few carvers left in this small tribe. These sculptures are highly prized now and may be even more so in the future due to diminishing resources and the decline in the number of individuals who painstakingly create them.
