Antique London Top Hat Blaylock & Blynn Philadelphia in Leather Carry Case Box

This Victorian top hat was made in England by Herbert Johnson, 38 New Bond Street, London W. Made Expressly for Blaylock & Blynn Philadelphia, which was located at 824 Chestnut Street. It comes in a heavy leather hat box, a sturdy protective travel/train case. Both interior of hat and outside of case are marked with the original owner's initials: E.B.

The HAT:

  • Made of a black corded material. Leather and satin interior with the much of the above information printed inside.
  • Hat is a very small size. Interior at brim measures 6-1/4" wide x 7-1/2" front to back. It is 6" to 6-1/2" high at the brim.
  • Exterior stitches have come undone at top of hat for about 3" but there is no opening hole through it and could be repaired by someone with sewing skills. Some spots of wear on the black leather interior surface look white. Bend in 2 interior wires make material on outside wrinkle a bit.

The CASE:

  • The case has plush rose red cushioned interior & red elasticized securing straps with brassy buckles (they have stretch loss from aging). The top interior is elasticized and looks like the hat brim fits inside it.
  • All leather parts of the case are still intact: It has a handle; 2 belts with buckles that secure the lid; a lock (patented July 1897) but no key; and a leather strap that serves as the hinge between the lid and case. Half is worn/torn from age/use but it is still halfway connected. It is very fragile... so to keep it attached, it must be handled very carefully, not allowing the lid to just fall all the way backward as it will surely tear all the way if mishandled. Most of the leather is smooth with signs of use as would be expected. Parts of the leather are fragile from aging... the belts and edges too... some brown comes off when handling it. We have tried to be very careful with it to keep it in as good condition as possible. Most cases similar to this one have all lost parts. It is amazing that this one is still so intact.
