1940s Unusual Hanging Planter Blue New Zealand Wood Pigeons Kereru Japan Vintage
This unique 1930's-1940's era vintage hanging planter depicts a pair of blue and white birds with pink beaks & feet sitting together on a tree branch. I believe they are Wood Pigeons, called Kereru by the inhabitants of New Zealand where they are found.
Stamp impressed under branch: Made in Japan.
5-1/8" high. 7-5/8" wide at branch. 7" deep beak to tail.
4 openings for cording or wire.
A couple of rough spots under branch are from the firing process where glaze stuck to the kiln shelf. This could always be ground smooth if so desired.
Some grayish color on the unglazed interior from use but the planter has been well cared for and is in excellent condition... no chips, cracks or repairs.
Purchased from an estate sale.
It is a rare item. I could find no others like it anywhere.
