John Maddock & Sons PANSY Platter Ironstone 1880-96 Vitrified 17 x 11.5 England

Here is a wonderful old ironstone serving platter made by John Maddock and Sons of England. The mark on back with manufacturer's name, royal crown logo, and vitrified banner (referring to ironstone) was used between 1880 and 1896 (according to Kovels' book on marks). The pattern is Pansy which is also marked on back of platter along with the name of the importer/distributer: James M Shaw New York. There is a royal crown logo impressed into the clay also. The platter is quite large and heavy. It measures 17" long x 11-5/8" wide x 1.5" high and weighs 5.75 pounds alone not including any packing materials or box. It is big enough to comfortably hold a large turkey or 2 roasted chickens side by side. There are a few light scratches on the top surface but much fewer than would be expected from over 100 years of use so I don't imagine it was used that frequently. There are also some scratches on the underside, probably from sliding it across a table. One 2" long pale brown crackle line at edge of juice well is barely noticeable but I mention it to be accurate with the description. The platter is in very good condition... no chips, cracks or repairs. Purchased from an estate sale.
