Big TANUKI Raccoon Dog Figure Japanese Cedar Cryptomeria Shapeshifter Signed 13"
We purchased this wonderful whimsical Tanuki sculpture from an American woman who bought it in Japan sometime during the 1950's-1960's when she lived there. It is made of cryptomeria wood (called sugi in Japan) with a fantastic raised pattern in the grain. It is signed with Japanese characters in painted brush strokes inside the hat. It measures 13 inches high. The body is 5-1/4 inches wide; the hat is 7 inches wide. Painted face and ears; a red cloth cape with woven pattern is tied with a tasseled cord. There is a tight check (drying crack) in the wood in back from drying and shrinking over time which is a natural occurrence. You can see a glue drip where left ear was attached and also a little glue can be seen behind head on the hat which is attached to head with one nail or screw. Back of hat has darkened with time. Great looking face! It has been well cared for and is in very good condition.
Tanuki are real animals... a sub-species of the Japanese raccoon dog, but they are also important characters in Japanese folklore. Legends say the mythical Tanuki is a mischievous, happy creature, a master of disguise and shapeshifting, easily fooled and often absentminded. 79.99s13.99 Scott
