Sunderland Pink Luster Handleless Cup & Saucer English Staffordshire circa 1840s
Here is an antique Sunderland pink luster handleless cup and deep saucer with hand painted fantasy gardens. Neither piece is signed. Sunderland pink lusterware is a name given to this type of pink luster glaze which was made by several English companies including Leeds and Newcastle; the most famous were made in or near Sunderland. We purchased the set from an estate sale along with other cups and plates from this era. See condition description below:
- Cup - It measures 2-3/8" high x 3.75" diameter at the rim. The background color appears to be ecru or tan due to an overall network of fine stained crackles. There are 4 brown specks of foreign material in the glaze which occurred during the manufacturing. Lustre is worn in spots along rim.
- Saucer - 5-1/2" in diameter x 1-1/4" high. Saucer has a white background. It has no crackles or stains. Two long scratches on picture area. Some loss of pink and luster in picture area and at rim.
It's still a great old pair. Quite romantic to drink from a cup that's about 170 years old. Amazing that it has survived for so long.
