Wawel Fine China Girl w Dove Vintage Portrait Plate 1800s Artist Painting Poland
Here is a fine china portrait plate by Wawel (pronounced vah’vull), entitled: “Dziewczyna Z Golabkiem” which means Girl with a Dove, the image taken from a 19th century painting by an unknown artist (Malarz Nieznany - Wiek XIX). This image has also been used on stamps. The plate measures 8-1/4" in diameter and has a factory imbedded metal wall hanger in the foot. It is in excellent condition.
A little info: Wawel has been making fine china in the same factory since 1831, in what is present-day Poland. In 1831, the land belonged to Silesia, Germany, and the company was called Krister Porzellan Manufaktur. The company became part of the Bavarian Rosenthal consortium in 1921. In 1945, it came under Polish rule and the name was changed to Krzysztof. The company started the name Wawel in 1953, by which it has been known ever since.
