Weidlich Bronze Bookends Temple Lamp of Knowledge Books Quill Pen 1920's Vintage
This vintage, circa 1920's, pair of bronze bookends by Weidlich Brothers depicts stairs leading upward to the Lamp of Knowledge found at the top of a stack of books, with inkwell and quill pen beside them. Rays of enlightenment shine from the lamp against a backdrop of ancient Greek architecture... The Temple of Knowledge. Both bookends are marked with WB in a shield and the number 640. 5Ó high x 4Ó wide x 2.75" deep. One still has 4 rubber feet; the other has 1 rubber foot with 3 missing from the holes drilled to hold them. These can always be replaced and/or removed. There is greenish oxidation in some of the recessed areas. I believe the black area to the left of the stairs and books to be a patina applied by the manufacturer as it is almost the same on both pieces. The finish is beautiful... a variety of shiny, lustrous variations of gold. They are in good condition, consistant with age and use. Purchased from an estate sale.
Weidlich Bros Mfg. Co. operated in Bridgeport, CT from 1901 to 1950. Their WB logo in a shield was a sign of quality design.
