2 NOS Deco Belt Buckles Rosewood Phenolic 30s Vintage Bakelite Catalin Old Stock
Here are 2 Art Deco belt buckles made of rosewood and phenolic resin. They are old store stock that had never been sold. They were among the many interesting items in a large group of vintage jewelry and women's accessories that I purchased from a man who rescued them from the basement storage of a 1930's-40's New York City dress shop when the building was demolished about 30 years ago.
They measure about 3-3/8" wide x 1-1/2" high. One is translucent apple juice butterscotch swirl which tests positive for bakelite with Simichrome. The black one does not. A heated pin will not pierce or melt the black however, which means it is probably Catalin, a more stable phenolic resin. The rosewood and phenolics are in very good condition. The metal parts on the back have white, green, and brown corrosion and rust. They are neat looking and could be made into great pins, earrings, or other projects.
