PC Gruss Vom Memminger Mau 4 Different Moon Legend Postcards Vintage
Here are 4 Gruss Vom Memminger Mau (Greetings from Memminger Moon... mau means moon in old Bavarian dialect) vintage postcards. All have different pictures and stories or sayings in German. Two are unused and two were postally sent... One is postmarked from Memminger. If there are dates in the postmarks, I cannot read them. All cards show one or more of the following types of wear... bumped corners, edge tears, wrinkling. I bought them from an estate sale along with a moon faced candy container with the same words and theme. See our other listings for the candy box.
The legend: a group of drunken councilmen staggering home from a tavern on a bright moonlit night saw the moon reflected in the rain barrels full of water near many of the houses (kept there for fire fighting purposes). In their drunken state, they thought they could scoop these bright lights out of the water with fish nets and be able to light up all the buildings in Memminger. Another story says a group of drunken soldiers drowned while attempting to save the moon who they believed to be a man drowning in the lake. I'm not sure which story is true... maybe both are... but the postcards and moon boxes filled with candy and/or moon shaped cakes are/were souvenirs sent back home from tourists visiting Memminger.
