Old Stoneware Milk Pitcher USA Jack in Pulpit Stripes Western Monmouth Pottery
Here is a vintage stoneware milk pitcher with diagonal stripes of jack in the pulpit type flowers and glazed with a warm brown slip glaze. USA is the raised mark in the clay. Similar shapes are often attributed to Monmouth Pottery of Illinois, which, along with 6 other pottery companies merged to become Western Stoneware Co. The pitcher measures 5-1/8" high; 4.5" in diameter at the rim; and 6" wide from spout to handle. It is a more primitively handled piece typical of wares made before WWII. There is an old smooth shallow flake on the rim or possibly a cluster of worn air bubbles which occurred after firing which has darkened with time and use. It is in good condition. It holds a pint and 1/4 comfortably... (20 ounces).
