Bauer Brusche French Casserole 50s Wavy Line Glaze Rare
Here is a Bauer stick handled French casserole designed by Herbert Brusche. It has the impressed mark: Brusche California U.S.A. My Bauer book says this line of contemporary dinnerware was promoted and introduced as Contempo or Al Fresco (depending on the glaze) by Brusche... and for some strange reason never mentioned that they were actually made by Bauer which is very confusing for collectors.
The glaze on this piece is very fifties modern and unusual... shiny white with a black to gray meandering or sensitive line as this type of design was sometimes called back then. This casserole holds 2 quarts comfortably. It measures about 4" high x 9" in diameter and 12" wide at the handle. The glaze has an overall pattern of crackles, some of which are stained. There's a short stained hairline inside the rim where the lid sits and one on the inside rim of the lid which can't be seen when the lid is in place. Despite the crackles, it's still a good looking, useful, and rare piece.
