John Meir & Son Purple Mulberry Transferware Handleless Cup 1847 Villa by a Lake
Here is an antique purple mulberry transfer ware handleless cup made by John Meir & Son with English Registry diamond marks giving the date code from March 17, 1847. Not enough room on the small foot for Meir's complete mark which usually showed his crown mark above and named the pattern below. The design shows a castle or villa by a lake with small gondola type boat all surrounded by gardens. It measures 2-3/8" high x about 4" diameter at the rim. Split at foot occurred during the manufacturing. Foot ring is dark from age and use. Rim is a bit stained from tea. I can see a network of fine unstained crackles in the glaze when I look closely at the surface. It's in good condition with exceptions noted. It was purchased from an estate sale along with other cups and plates from this era.
A little info: John Meir of Tunstall Staffordshire was founded in 1812 then re-named John Meir & Son in 1837 when he took his son into the business which continued until 1897.
