Tanuki are known in Japanese folklore as mystical shape-shifting spirits... raccoon, dog, badger, and fox-like composites. Once portrayed as frightening, they have more recently become benevolent figures bringing good luck and prosperity.

  • This rare tanuki has a small floating tanuki nodder head at his side.
  • Made of wood, the round belly area is Japanese cedar, called sugi, or cryptomeria, with a striking textured grain.
  • Hat is made of an organic leaf-like material and nailed to head with tape at center.
  • Hand painted faces.
  • Purple cord with tassels.
  • It measures 8-1/4" high and 6" wide (including head of nodder).
  • Original glue shows at neck and ear joins.
  • Hat shows light wear but everything else is in excellent condition.
  • Purchased with a collection of tanukis from an estate sale.
