Bowl Yellow Ware Vintage Shoulder Mixing Bowl McCoy Square Foot Wave Pattern 2-1/2 Qt
Here is a vintage, probably McCoy, yellow ware shoulder bowl (a reference to the rim to shoulder stacking pattern in the kiln... whereby the rims and shoulders of such bowls are not glazed so they could be stacked, one on top of another, without sticking together when the glaze melted). It is glazed with a brown Albany Slip glaze which has areas of iridescence that are most noticeable when held sideways to the light. The exterior is embossed with a wave-like pattern. The squared foot is typical of McCoy's early mixing bowls. I have found no bowls with this pattern and glaze combination on ebay or anywhere on the internet. There are no marks on the base. The bowl measures 5-1/8 inches high x 9-1/4 inches in diameter at rim. It holds 2-1/2 quarts with room to spare. It has some small imperfections that occurred during the manufacturing, allowances typical of the era: a few small glaze skips, about a dozen small pin holes in the glaze, and some tiny bumps in the clay. Years of use has worn down the glaze on the octagonal foot where the outer surface has lost its shine and it is worn completely off on the corners which are white and smooth. Interior has some scratches and worn glaze surface from mixing and stirring. It is in good used condition. There are no chips, cracks or repairs.
