Here are 2 modern art style vintage pins from the 1950's.

• Enameled bird on copper hexagon with 4 big melted glass "gems"... one is the eye; 3 in the wing. It measures 1-7/8" side to side; 2-1/8" point to point. The safety clasp pin back is glued in place. There are 2 tiny flakes to the enamel at the 2 adjacent right side corners. It's in very good condition otherwise.
• Overlapping copper and brass curved triangular shapes creates an interesting modern shape. Safety clasp pin back is signed: Kim. Safety lock on pin is extremely tight. 4.25" x 2.25". Some thin dark marks & tiny green circles in patina in center of brass shape. It's in good condition otherwise.

Wacky and wonderful, this huge artist signed bird pin should put a smile on your face. The surface is textured with shimmery metallics: turquoise, green, magenta, lilac, gold and silver. Real pink feathers on head and tail. Jiggley blue eye. Signed: Lenora 1996. It appears to be plastic from the back. I don't know what the colors and textures are on the front. 1930's or 40's... the type of one-of-a-kind piece that was being made in bakelite, lucite, and wood... carved by individual artisans, making many of these pieces unique... little works of collectible art. 4-5/8" long x 2-5/8" at the widest. It has a blue rhinestone eye and it's body is covered with a piece of what appears to be snake skin that has a blue to purple hue... probably dyed... or are there snakes that color? The skin edges are covered in the back by a piece of leather. The glue is drying out under both of these and they might need to be re-glued at some point. Back of leather has a lighter oval where a price tag once was. It's in very good condition with exceptions noted. Originally purchased from an estate sale about 20 years ago. It has been in my collection ever since.

Great looking 1940's flying bird pin is painted metal with pave set rhinestones. Colors are red, black and white with yellow feet and beak. There are a few dots of white paint loss, but it's hard to notice without a magnifier... and they could always be touched up if so desired. This unusual parrot pin is made of real feathers. His eye is a yellow bead. His beak is a diamond shaped piece of red acetate or other plastic. He's about 4.25" long. This silver pin features a large inlaid bird gesturing with one outstretched wing. That wing is lighter in color, made with abalone shell. The rest of the bird is darker, with small bits of abalone set into the silver with a black binding material. There's a loop on the back so it could be worn as a pendant. Marked with 3 different stamps: a number 3 eagle, which represents Taxco and sometimes Guadalajara; a circle mark that reads: Sterling Taxco Mexico with the artist's 3 intials inside. I think they are RC and D... the D not completely struck. The 3rd mark seems to be Aroche Alpaca. Alpaca means nickle silver which means some part of this pin is nickle silver and some part is sterling... I don't know which is which. It measures approximately 2" x 1.75". Tiny pin head sized dig in metal at bottom edge below bird's feet. In very good condition. Purchased from an estate sale.18s3

Unusual golden bird pin is marked: Arthus Bertrand Paris. Designs indented in the body are filled with a red material. Red in the eye is cracked. The top dot has no red in it. • Coppery parrot clip pin circa 1940's is a little over 2" high. Toothed clip fastener. The copper color is a wash over a silver colored metal some of which worn away in places. It's in good condition otherwise.

This wonderful 1940's vintage bug pin is made of cut and shaped brass with painted eyes and orange bakelite belly. 2-5/8" wide x 2" high. There's some darkening to the brass surface in areas. It may have had some type of clear finish on the surface originally... when you hold it sideways to the light you can see some variations in the surface that look like parts still have that finish and others do not. It's a neat old piece! Purchased from an estate sale about 30 years ago. It's been in my collection since then.

This vintage butterfly pin is marked Coro Sterling in a rectangle, a circa 1940's mark. The coppery color is probably a rosy gold wash. Four large amethyst color rhinestones make up the body, 2 clear rhinestones are the eyes, topped by 2 long antennae. 1-3/4" x 1-5/8". There are a couple of pale dark marks in the wings near the body. They are noticeable at some angles and not very noticeable at others. In very good condition otherwise. From an estate sale.

Beautiful little guilloche enamel butterfly pin is 2 shades of purple and yellow enamel over engraved metal (probably silver). The designs show through the enamel translucent enamel making a highly detailed and lacey effect. The eyes are dots of rusty orange color. Back of pin is also enameled in green. The first is a 1950's era stylized sterling silver cat pin by Beau. It is so marked and also has their B logo on the back of the head. 1-5/8" high. Safety clasp pin back. Face has a satiny brushed finish. I have never tried to polish it. There are some dark areas on the body that would probably benefit from a little polish.

This unusual, finely crafted, deer or antelope pin was made in France and is so marked on the back. Metal is gold in color. Tiny pink rhinestone eyes. The body is turquoise suede in the shape of a large cabochon gem. Someone once told me they thought you were supposed to put perfume on the suede area, but I don't think anyone ever did that because the color is uniform and there is no fragrance to it. It's in very good condition. 1.75" high x 1-1/8" wide. The clasp has a pull back tube surrounding the pin shank for safety. Purchased from an estate sale about 25 years ago.

Here's a neat dinosaur pin with a polished rock or mineral cabochon which is bezel set in the center. This is a profile view of a triceratops. Possibly the type of stone has some significance... maybe taken from a site near a dinosaur dig or a piece of polished bone. The metal is silver in color. The pin back and bezel appear to be silver soldered to the flat silhouette cut-out. I polished it with a rouge cloth and it shined quickly the way silver does. There are fine scratches on the flat front surface and the maker's file marks on the back. 1-1/8" high x 2-3/16" long. Purchased from an estate sale.

Here's a whimsical carved wooden dog pin from the bakelite era... late 1930's through WWII, when all types of materials were used to make highly creative jewelry. Manufacturers had to be inventive as many metals were confiscated by the government for use during the war effort.

This dog was hand carved by an artist craftsman who will, unfortunately, remain unknown. The pin is approximately 2.5" high x 2.5" wide. His painted details show some color loss but he still looks great and could be touched up if so desired. I've just kept him the way I found him. The felt hat is covering a wooden support underneath so it's not at all flimsy and is in very good condition. Old fashioned C clasp pin back is imbedded with prongs into the wood as was the style at that time. I bought him from an estate sale about 25 years ago. He's in very good vintage condition. 40s3

• Signed ART dragonfly stick pin for lapel, hat, scarf, etc. Gold tone metal set with glass jewels: jade body, pearls on wings, ruby red eyes. Bug is 7/8" x 1-1/8". Pin is 2-11/16" in total including nib. Excellent condition.
• Signed Czechoslovakia butterfly pin is silver metal with prong set clear, pink and green rhinestones. 1/2" x 3/4". Silver metal has darkened the same way sterling and silver plate do. It is not marked as to metal content. I have never tried to polish it. Very good condition.

Great looking sculptural silver fish pin has inlaid onyx eye and turquoise tail fins. The separately formed side fin gives a dramatic 3-dimensional look to the piece. It is also set with a turquoise tear drop shaped piece. Stamp signed on back with the silver purity mark 950 (which means it contains 950 parts of silver per 1000, more than sterling silver which is 925). It is also marked: TS-101 Mexico. According to the Billie Hougart book on Mexican silver marks, the T stands for Taxco, the S stands for the artists first or last initial, and the 101 means that this is the one hundred and first person to be registered with that initial in the city of Taxco. This system of marking has been used since 1980. The pin is 2-13/16" high x 1-15/16" wide. It is in excellent condition. Purchased from an estate sale.

Here are 2 pieces of jewelry with the Southwest howling wolf theme. One is a pewter pin signed JJ 1988 with wolves, moon, mountains, rocks and cactus. The other is a pair of black wooden howling wolf earrings painted with colorful magical symbols and designs. Pin is 1.5" high x 3" long. It has a slightly mottled surface in the mountains... part gloss, part semi-gloss. This might be intended or a surface sealer finish that is worn in spots... it seems to give a bit of texture/dimension to the mountains. It is in good condition. Earrings are 2-1/8" long. This vintage pin is a replica of an ancient artifact. It was commissioned and sold by The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City which is the signature stamp on the back and in whose collection the original probably is. I purchased it many years ago at an estate sale so don't have all the information about what it represents. The animal could be a burro, donkey or llama. Here's a great novelty pin from the 1940's. It's a whimsical giraffe with bent rod moving dangling legs and rope tail. Made of red, white & blue marbled plastic... which gives him an overall purple-y color. These kooky pins were dime store delights during the WWII era... gave women something to smile about. Many metals were confiscated by the government for war use and the jewelry makers had to find other sources of supplies... hence plastics, bakelite, and wood. He's 3" long.
