Children's- Antique Victorian Children's Book 1899 CROCUS TRAGEDY

Here's an unusual Victorian era children's book entitled The Crocus Tragedy by Reuben M. Streeter. Copyright 1899. Published by Potter & Putnam Company, New York. Hardbound. Pictorial cover is the same illustration as on the frontispiece. 11.5" x 9-1/8". It's very artfully presented with the look of an artist's sketch book. Words are all hand lettered in fancy printing style of the day. The illustrations are printed from pen and ink sketches which are interspersed with the words along with a group of illustrations printed from watercolors in brown and white. Boards are covered with a deeply textured handmade looking thick paper. Endpapers are impressed with a silky feeling moire patterned paper. Pages are double folded, with uncut edges. Inscribed in brown ink: Presented to Carroll Alfred Bates by His Mama, Phila- Feb- 22nd- 1904. Brown circle stains on spine, front and back. A piece of the front cover paper has been torn off of bottom right corner, which reveals a second layer of same underneath. All pages have pale waterstains top outside corners. Cover corners are bumped and worn. Front cover board is slightly curved. Moire endpapers have cracked along spine edge. Browning on last 2 unprinted facing pages. It's still a wonderful old book, very different, interesting and of another time... a story the author first told to his daughter about the end of Winter, the coming of Spring and the tragic murder of the crocus twins.
