1 Tiffany 1936 Bronze Medal Berwind White Coal Mine 50th

Here is a bronze medal made by Tiffany & Co. in 1936 for The Berwind White Coal Mining Company's 50th Anniversary. It measures 3.25" in diameter and about 1/4" thick. Front depicts a kneeling miner holding a chunk of coal and a pickax with the words: The Berwind White Coal Mining Co 50th Anniversary overhead. The other side shows a steamship and a factory each in a square frame. The word Eureka (I found it!) is inscribed on a banner above; the years 1886-1936 are inscribed on a banner below. Signed at the bottom: TIFFANY & CO. The edge is marked BRONZE along with an Old English "m" which stands for Edward C. Moore, superintendent of manufacturing and a company director. The medal is in excellent condition. Purchased from an estate sale. Thanks to The Numismatic Bibliomania Society for information which I did not have about the meaning of the "m" mark on the edge.

Some company info: Berwind-White Coal Mining Company was founded in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, by brothers Charles and Edward Berwind and Judge Allison White. They opened other mines in Cambria, several in the Paint Creek Valley south of Johnstown, Somerset and Westmoreland Counties. The company operated several mines into the 1950s, but in 1962 they reorganized into the Berwind Company, a Philadelphia-based firm that manages the real estate holdings of the company. Although no longer engaged in mining, the firm still retains extensive mineral and surface rights in Cambria and Somerset Counties.Ê90s7.99
