Fun and flashy 1940's vintage necklace features a tasty medley of yellow (dyed) shell discs and green handblown glass fruit charms. They are hung from a celluloid link chain in the same way as many of the bakelite charms were worn. The links are clear and heat fused together. Clasp is a large circle. About 16" long. Originally purchased from an estate sale about 25 years ago... it has been in my collection ever since, although, as with most of the jewelry I've collected, I've never worn it... just admired it. Here is a great looking 2 piece parure consisting of a matching necklace and bracelet. They are old store stock purchased from an old family run beauty parlor boutique liquidation sale. They are new, never used, never sold. The bracelet has the boutique tag with their price and inventory number. There are no tags on the necklace. The set was probably made by Napier as most of the jewelry from this sale had Napier tags. These do not have maker's marks or tags. They are gold color metal. Here are 2 necklaces with turquoise beads.

• One is vintage... from the 1940's with big 1/2" opaque glass ovals, individually knotted between each as was the custom with better necklaces. The end section has smaller beads on wire connectors with a large hook for fastening. 16" long. Purchased from an estate sale about 30 years ago. Some of the knots look a little frayed. It's in good condition otherwise.
• The other is newer but was also previously owned, purchased from an estate sale sometime within the past 10 years. It has mottled turquoise beads that appear to be natural polished stones. They are cold to the touch with slight irregularities in the surface from iron or other inclusions and also appear to have a matt finish at some of the drilled holes where that part is not quite round or irregular. Here's a 1960's vintage artist made primitive rock amulet necklace that we bought from a craft store in the late 60's or early 70's. The rock is held with metal, wrapped with fine cording, and suspended from a leather thong. The pendant is 1.5" long x 2" wide. Cord is 25" long. This wonderful necklace was made with vintage glass beads and a 1940's vintage carved bakelite double leaf shaped buckle as decorative connector. It looks great when worn in the front... like a jazzy jeweled bow tie. The beads are translucent blue and lavender with clear glass spacer beads. Unusual shapes in the front... cubes, winged circles, planet-like spheroids, with smaller rounds for comfort in the back. The buckle tests positive for bakelite with scrubbing bubbles and "sniff" tests. Metal findings are imbedded in the back. Buckle is 5" wide x 1-1/8" high. Each half is 2.5" wide. Total length of necklace is 17.25". It lies very nicely on the neck and is comfortable to wear. Everything is in very good condition. I've had this piece for about 30 years. It's a head turner! Great looking vintage 40's necklace is made up of a group of blue beads... some of them are carved, some look lathed, others are of various shapes and sizes. I've collected similar necklaces in various colors over the years. Some of them tested positive for bakelite with the scrubbing bubbles test. Others did not. This one does not, so it is some other type of vintage plastic. 16.5" long. Barrel shaped screw clasp. The cording has stretched with time. When held at one end, about 5/8" of cording is exposed. Very nice 1940's vintage strand of blue glass beads has front section of large smooth chunky cylinders separated by faceted blue crystal beads. The middle portion of the necklace is made up of several smaller sizes of faceted crystal beads, alternating light and darker blue. The back section is made up of even smaller beads, alternating faceted crystals with smooth sided discs, then all crystals again, all alternating in the shade of blue. 17" long. Spring ring clasp. String has stretched somewhat over the years. A small bit of it shows on either side of the clasp. In very good condition otherwise. I purchased it at an estate sale about 20 years ago. About 25 years ago I purchased this wonderful 1940's vintage carved catalin red hot chili peppers buckle from an antique store (along with 3 matching buttons... which I sold). I incorporated it into the necklace you see photographed here because I wanted to be able to wear it!! By doing this it becomes not only a fantastic pendant/necklace ornament, it also works as the clasp or closure for the necklace. The beads are vintage red and black glass... the larger ones are faceted, the little red spacer beads are not. I once thought the buckle might be bananas... but since chili peppers also grow this way... and red suits peppers better than bananas... I've decided they must be peppers :-) The buckle is 3-3/8" wide x 2-5/8" long. The necklace is 21" long including the buckle.

\r\rThe buckle does not test positive for Bakelite with the scrubbing bubbles test. However, it is made in the same manner as carved bakelite... you can see the marks on the sides of the peppers where it was carved and saw marks on the back where it was sliced from the stock. I believe it is probably Catalin, another thermal setting plastic, similar to Bakelite but with a more stable chemical composition than Bakelite. Much of the bright jewelry of the 30's and 40's was made of Catalin, but because of it's stability, it doen't oxidize with exposure to air as Bakelite does and therefore doesn't present with a yellow mark when tested in a similar manner.

There are some age marks that can be seen on the surface when held sideways to the light which I never noticed until now when checking it carefully to describe for the auction. It's in very good condition otherwise. It's a great looking piece and a lot of fun to wear! I always got lots of compliments... and offers to buy it... whenever I wore it.

This wonderful elephant necklace with matching earrings appears to made of carved bone. The elephants on the necklace are varied in size. The largest (1-3/4") is a free hanging pendant. The rest are strung like beads and get smaller as they get closer to the neck. The largest of them is an inch high, the smallest is about a half inch high. The entire necklace is 31" long, not including the pendant elephant. The earrings are 1-1/8" long. They are French hooks made for pierced ears. This ethnic hippy style, popular in the 1960's when all things India were "in", is now in fashion again 40 years later. Purchased at an estate sale. In very good condition.

These nice chunky 1940's era beads look like bakelite but don't test positive for bakelite with the scrubbing bubbles test. Under hot water, they don't smell like bakelite either... but they do have a weird smell and are definitely a vintage plastic of some type. They are very dramatic no matter what they're made of. Strand is 20" long. Central bead is 7/8" x 5/8". Large carved cylinders are 1" long, small carved ones are 3/4" long. Spring ring closure is 12 karat gold filled, marked 12KGF. Great looking chunky links choker collar necklace consists of repeating rectangles with a wonderful granulated textured surface. Each has an oval cabochon "stone" of opaque glass that appears to be black or silvery black like hematite. The necklace is 16.5" long. Each link is .75" x 15/16" long. Toggle and loop fastener are actually pretty and designed to go with the rest of the necklace. It has a wonderful look... like a designer piece, but there are no marks to indicate maker. 3rd and 4th link from the left have a slightly darker area near the bottom of the rectangle where the surface of some of the granules aren't as silvery as the others, but it's basically in very good condition. This wonderful luminescent pearly gray plastic set was made in the 1940's. These moonstone-like beads were called "DuPont pearls" :-) The beads are a graduated strand, knotted in-between each "pearl". The spring ring closure is silver, marked sterling. 18.75" long. The stretch bracelet is a double strand of graduated "pearls" with a wide double rigded curved piece. 3/4" wide. Interior circumference when unstretched is about 6-3/4". A little bit of elastic shows at where the beads join the large piece so they have lost some of their zing but are still stretchy. The knotted elastic ends are cleverly hidden in recessed openings in the large piece. If you needed to restring the bracelet, it would be very easy to do. In very good condition. Unusual tablet style pendant has what appears to be Egyptian hieroglyphic pictures raised up from the oval. The pendant is 2.75" long... loop and bail not included. Pretty box link chain is 23" long. This wonderful vintage necklace was probably someone's souvenir of their trip to Florida, Hawaii or other tropical paradise vacation spot. The focal heart and surrounding discs are made of faux (not real) tortoise inlaid with silvery metal silhouettes depicting tropical seashore motifs... sailboats, palm tree, sea turtles, and fish. Heart measures 1-7/16" in both directions. Discs are 3/4" diameter. Total length is 18.5". Some surface wear on faux tortoise surface, light scratches on inlaid metal (one fish has lots of little dot dents), darkened jump rings. It's still a neat looking piece. Here are 4 Southwest or American Indian style jewels. All were purchased from estate sales. All are in very good condition with any exceptions noted by each item. They are as follows:

• Necklace - silver colored metal with 11 fetish type of animal charms (frogs, birds, turtles, and a 4 legged creature that may be a prairie dog or squirrel). Barrel clasp. 30" long.
• Bracelet - silver colored metal with turquoise color "stones" (I think they're plastic) set in toothed bezels with indented designs and scalloped edges. Stamped with center logo (I can't decipher) and "Nickle Silver" (which has no silver in it). 1/2" wide. Interior circumference is 5.25" with 1" opening.
• Earrings - silver colored metal with coil and arrowhead design. Marked J.J. Posts for pierced ears.
• Earrings - silver colored metal on brass colored metal with prairie (possibly it's a lake), mountain, and moon design. They have a handcrafted look. French hooks for pierced ears. 2" long. Here's a great looking 1960's era necklace with 5 pale green carved jade discs, 3 beads, knotted dark green cording with dark green tassels. The carvings portray an animal in the center of each of the small disc and 5 of the same animal in the large disc. All are surrounded by curlycues. I think they might be rabbits. Good if you love rabbits or were born in the year of the rabbit. The large pendant disc measures 2.5" in diameter. The smaller ones measure 1.25". Length of necklace that goes around the neck is 29". Wonderful vintage necklace appears to be made with polished jasper beads of various types and colors. Here are 3 wonderful luminescent pearly plastic jewels from the 1940's. There are 2 necklaces and a wide bangle bracelet. These moonstone-like beads have been referred to as "DuPont pearls" :-)

• Blue graduated single strand is 17" long. Clasp is a pinch stick that slides and locks inside the last bead. In very good condition.
• White beads are a graduated double strand with pinch bar clasp that slides inside a large bead and locks securely. Necklace is about 16" long. Knots in strings at clasp end could be neater. Strings have stretched over the years so some string shows at the ends. In very good condition otherwise.
• Bracelet is a 1" wide gray pearly cuff. Interior circumference is 8-1/8". There are a few light scratches on the bracelet. In good condition otherwise.

Great looking 1940'-50's vintage necklace by Marvella is a double strand of beads. Half of each strand is made up of hollow antiqued gold filagree beads and the other half is made up of graduated honey colored faceted crystals... all separated by tiny gold spacer beads... with each strand strung up opposite to the other. Vintage signed Monet necklace and earrings set is red, white, and blue enameled. The necklace is shaped, hinged links with progressions of small blue trapezoids, red hexagons, and curved white wedges. Earrings are not hinged but echo the same shape units. This wonderful 1930's opera length necklace is made of big faceted orange and clear glass beads, all individually knotted in between. It's about 42 or 43 inches long. On close examination I can see there are a few tiny flakes on some edges ot tips but none that are noticeable from a foot away. Originally purchased from an estate sale about 25 years ago. Outrageous & flashy, this 1960's vintage necklace and earring set reminds me of some of Hattie Carnegie's kookie jewels. The big faux (not real) turquoise and pearl bead gems all dangle and jangle from a long shiny gold colored chain. Faux turquoise, pearls (and coral) were "in" in the sixties. The cratered pearly spheres are slightly over 1/2" in diameter. The elongated turquoise beads are 5/8" in diameter and 3/4" long. Necklace chain is 31" long. The central cluster of gems hangs down from that for another 3.5 inches. The earrings are 2" long not including the wire hook. I substituted ear wires for the original clips when I purchased them from an estate sale about 25 years ago. They're in excellent condition.

Wonderful 1940's necklace is made up of several sizes of marbled and swirled green glass beads (probably meant to imitate jade) and pierced and carved bone beads. The spring ring clasp is marked: Sterling. 17" long. The cord on which they are strung has tightened over the years but they seem to hang right and still look good when worn. The bone beads have inset brass findings at each end to make for easier stringing. They have oxidized and acquired a dark and/or greenish patina but it seems to blend in with the color of the beads and isn't very noticeable unless you look closely. They could always be polished if so desired. In very good condition.

This vintage purple glass bead necklace is opera length... 48 inches long. Beads are 2 different sizes with round ridged golden metal spacer beads in-between each one. Big beads are about 1-3/8" long; small ones are 1/2". I wiped each bead with a damp cloth before we photographed them and when doing so I noticed that 2 of the small beads have a tiny flake. I never noticed them before and don't think you would normally see them unless you were examining them carefully. They're in very good condition otherwise.
