Picture1 Arca Salad Servers Horn Ebony Modern Italian Designer

Here is a modern 2 piece salad serving set, designed and hand made in Italy by ARCA. Online sites showing other salad servers made by Arca that appear to be made of the same materials as these, say they are made of buffalo horn (melted and shaped) with ebony handles. This pair is 13" long. Other salad servers by Arca cost upward of $200. Arca cautions to avoid excessive heat or moisture which means don't put them in the dishwasher. The spoon has a check (hairline crack) in the wood at the top back. Both spoon and fork have ridges in the back of the horn area... the spoon more so than the fork. At first I thought they were part of the design but they are surface cracks in the material. They are still a great looking set and will probably function just fine with some TLC (no dishwasher, no real hot water). Comes in red cloth bag. Purchased from an estate sale. !! Just found the original hang tag from Arca inside the bag. It reads: "You have acquired an object which has been handcrafted in Italy according with a very old tradition. Horn is a natural product. Do not expose it to great heat and above all do not wash in the dishwasher."

Picture13 De Renaudin Elegant Horn Stainless Flatware France

Here are 13 pieces of De Renaudin's elegant "Classic" style flatware purchased from an estate sale. Materials are horn and stainless steel (18/10). There are:

  • 4 Coffee spoons - 6.25 inches (16 cm)
  • 3 Soup spoons - 9 inches (23 cm)
  • 2 small forks - 8 inches (21 cm)
  • 1 large fork - 9 inches (22 cm)
  • 3 knives - 10.25 inches (26 cm)

Unfortunately, many of these pieces are de-laminating and have some separations between the layers... some small, some larger. Possibly they can be repaired as horn is plyable when heated, able to be melted and glued. 2 of the small spoons are in very good condition with no cracks or splits; 1 small fork and the large fork are in pretty good condition with small separations; 1 knife is in good condition with only small separations; 2 soup spoons are in fair condition with small separations but they are on the edges where you would feel them when using them.

One 5 piece place setting when purchased new costs $195.00 Some retailers of laminated flatware advise keeping away from excessive heat and moisture... that means they should not be put in the dishwasher.

From De Renaudin's brochure: "With De Renaudin's flatware, your dinner table will look like the setting for an elegant feast. Our unique silverware mixes horn and stainless steel imported from France - a classic and modern combination that is ideal for fine china and exquisite food. A review in Oprah Winfrey's O magazine sang the praises of our flatware collection. Elle DŽcor magazine also gave De Renaudin a glowing review, describing our flatware accessories as 'refined' and 'timeless'."

Picture2 Pr Salad Servers Silver Plt Rogers Lily Flower Fruit

Here are 2 different pairs of salad servers both purchased from estate sales.

  • Silver plate fork and spoon with a leaf-like handle were made by Wm Rogers Mfg Co. They are so marked. Backs also read: Original Rogers. They're about 9" long. They show use and wear, especially the spoon which has many scratches in the bowl.
  • This unusual set has wooden utensil parts with silver plated handles. They have no makers mark that I can find. Handles have a fruit motif... grapes and maybe apples at the ends, leaves and berries along the edges. Fork is 11-3/8" long. The spoon is slightly shorter. Wear to wood finish where the wood joins the handles and on the tips of fork tines where one tine also looks like there might be a little chip on the tip. In good condition otherwise.

PictureAnchor Rogers Silverplate Serving Fork Alhambra 1907

This vintage Rogers silverplated serving fork is in the Alhambra pattern from 1907. Marked: Pat July 9, '07 Anchor Rogers Anchor. 8.5" long. The elaborate pattern is wonderful... extending down the handle and into the bowl area of the fork with great darkened patina in the recessed areas showing off the pattern. The condition is good to fair. The handle is in good condition. The fork part is only fair. The front shows light scratches and dot digs with several small dark oxidized circles where the plating is worn at the end of the central design. The back shows wear to the plating in the resting spot as is typical of many vintage flatware pieces. It also has some scratches and digs to the surface. It's a pretty piece though and if you're collecting this pattern and don't have the fork, this one will still serve well until a better one comes along. Purchased from an estate sale.

PictureButter Knife Silverplate 26 Vintage Butter Knife Rogers Crown Loeser

Here are 26 vintage silverplated butter knives purchased from a farmhouse estate sale. Someone must have collected them. I don't know the patterns. Starting on the top row, from left to right, they are marked as follows:

  • 6 Aristocrat Silverplate
  • 1 L & C M Co Superfine XXXX is monogrammed with a B
  • 6 Loeser & Co. Inc.
  • 5 Edward Drake & Co
  • 4 Crown Silverplate
  • 5 Anchor Rogers Pat Sept 3, 1912

All have been used. All show signs of age and use. I haven't polished them except with my finger to make the marks more visable in the photos. I would say they are in average to good condition except the 5 Anchor Rogers knives which show lines from heavy cleaning, plate wear, and a couple of spots of greenish oxidation on the bottom one.

Whimsical people are impressed into the handles and filled with a black substance. One is holding a spoon. Both are 5" long and nest inside each other. PictureColonial America + Extra Antique Coin Silver Teaspoon

Here's a teaspoon that I believe is early American coin silver, probably handmade. This was one of a small group of such spoons we purchased from an estate sale and sold on eBay a few months ago. I couldn't identify the maker of this one and still haven't been able to. Hopefully you will know more about it than I do. It's thin with a lightly engraved worn monogram that I can't decipher. The bowl has been bent near the handle end. It's 6" long.

We're also encluding another spoon, or part of a spoon, that came from that same estate. I'm not sure of the metal content. It once had a handle of a different material. The bowl is attached to a long bar that went inside the original handle... maybe wood, or mother of pearl, or bone. The bowl has some black on it as if it might have been in a fire. 5-13/16" long.

The fork is 10" long and has a group of cut marks across the tines where the original owner apparently carved the meat as well as the fork. They were purchased from an estate sale in this wooden holder which is marked: Regent Cutlery. PictureKINGS Sterling Silver Handle CAKE Pie SERVER

KINGS cake server has a sterling silver handle with stainless steel blade and is so marked. Many companies have made flatware in the KINGS pattern since the latter part of the 19th century. This piece has no maker's mark to identify which one. It was made after 1913 since that was the year researchers discovered that steel could be made "stainless" (corrosion resistant) by adding chromium. 9-5/8" long. Scratches and a few spots of discoloration on the blade. The handle is in very good condition.. ironically, the sterling is in better condition than the stainless.

PictureWanamakers Dept Store Restaurant 14 Silver Plate Knives

These 14 silver plated knives came from the John Wanamaker's Department Store restaurant in Moorestown, NJ. They were sold along with all the fixtures when the store went out of business several years ago. We acquired a group of the flatware. It was made with various handle styles over the years. There are 3 different styles of dinner knife here and one butter knife. The butter knife reads: John Wanamaker on the handle (which appears to be somewhat bent). It's 5-7/8" long. All the dinner knives have the JW monogram. They range in size from 9.25" to to 8.5" to 8-3/8" long. They have no maker's marks. I've polished one of each group so you can see how they look when polished, but the others are dirty and need polishing as they've been stored away for several years. They were regularly and heavily used and as such show signs of use... scratches, digs, etc, but these can be romantic items for those of us who ever dined there or have a childhood memory of some great shopping expedition with parents or grandparents. We're also offering iced tea spoons and forks this week.

PictureWm Rogers '23 MAYFAIR Silver Plt Flatware 33 pc G Mono

Here are 33 pieces of silver plated flatware made by William Rogers & Son in the 1923 pattern called Mayfair. They are monogrammed with fancy Gothic style G. Proper ettiquette for old silverware was to have the letters facing away from the diner and these do. If you look at the in the other direction (so they could be seen by the diner) the letter looks like more like a D. Enough pieces for 4 place settings with extras. There are:

  • 11 knives
  • 11 forks
  • 7 teaspoons
  • 4 soup spoons

Marked on backs: Pat.Mar.13.23 Wm Rogers & Sons AA. Knife blades are marked: Insico (International Silver Company) Stainless. All of them are very dark. I polished the darkest ones with a gentle silver polish to make sure that they would clean up okay. Slight bend in one of the soup spoon bowls makes it a little out of round. 3 knife blades have been noticeably sharpened and 3 other knife blades have rough spots at the tips. One teaspoon has a dent in the center of the bowl. The polished surfaces show wear and age as would be expected from used silverware.

PictureWm Rogers 6 Silverplate Citrus Spoons Early 1900s Ideal

Here are six silverplated spoons marked: Wm Rogers & Son AA. They have narrow pointy bowls, the type that I believe are sometimes called orange spoons or grapefruit spoons, but very good for any citrus fruits. They are almost like the 1923 pattern called Ideal shown in my book except for the slight indent in the metal that follows the lines. There are several patterns like this which were variations on the antique "threaded" pattern. These came from the same estate sale as the George Washington set we have offered this week and were probably an attempt by the original owner to match that pattern as closely as possible. 5-7/8" long. They have, of course, been used and show average signs of wear. Backs show wear to the plating on the spot where they would rest on the table. I would say they are in good used condition. I haven't polished them.
