The sugar has no lid (don't know if it originally had one but it probably did) and a grayed flake at the rim. All still look good and would be quite serviceable. They are basically in good condition with the exceptions noted. Saucers and sugar are marked with a black, half circle stamp shown in photos below which reads: FRANCISCAN Made in California. This style mark was used for just 4 years, from 1949 until February 1953. The cups are marked Made in U.S.A. with some numbers. The bowls are marked with only the number 52 (might be the year?).

Franciscan Pottery 1940's Jam Jelly Jars Unusual ColorThis pair of 1940's marmalade jars were made by Franciscan Pottery and are so marked on the bases. This color combination seems unusual (at least to me)... chocolate brown jars with a pinkish cafe' au lait glaze on the lids. I've had several sets of these jars in the past which were all in combinations of those bright fiesta colors... yellow, blue, red, and green. One jar is in excellent condition. The other has a tiny pin head sized flake at the highest tip on the lid finial, a flake on the foot the size of 2 pin heads, and 2 pin point sized flea bites at bottom edge corner. Hall China Ivory Rayed Coffee Pot 40's Vintage PotteryHere is a 1940's vintage coffee pot. It is unmarked but those of you who are familiar with or collect Hall China will know it is the Rayed shape used for the popular Autumn Leaf pattern. My Hall book shows the Rayed coffeepot with Autumn Leaf pattern but no other coffee pots with this shape style. It has a raised flower shape on the lid around the finial. None of the pictures I have seen show the lid from the top so I can't comment on whether this is standard on the Rayed shape or not. This coffee pot has no marks on the base. Maybe it was one that got through the firing without the Autumn Leaf decals or maker's mark having been applied. It's 9" high. It has a countersunk lid. It's a heavy hotel type of china typical of Hall. The ivory glaze is also typical of Hall, creamy and smooth with a slightly yellowed glassy quality where it pools in the indented designs. There's a slight manufacturing imperfection at the rim near the spout and a couple of pinholes in the glaze... one at the spout tip and one in the rays to the left of the spout. There's a small chip inside the spout on the flat side near the corner. All else is in very good condition. It may be of interest to collectors if it was not an item typically produced in any of their normal lines. Any info you have and could share would be greatly appreciated. Purchased from an estate sale.

Hotel China 8 Old Sterling Diner China Dinner Plate Mug Acorns OakHere are 8 pieces of Sterling Vitrified China. It's sturdy, heavy duty stuff, made to withstand knocking about and constant use. Some folks call it hotel china, others call it diner china, or restaurant ware... I guess it all depends where you go out for a meal. There are four 9.5" dinner plates and 4 mugs all in the same burgundy or cranberry red pattern of oak leaves and acorns. They have been used. There are small short light scratches on the plate surfaces that might not show up in the photos but they still look good and will last for a long time to come. There's a little bump of excess clay at the foot of one mug which occurred during the manufacturing. There are no cracks or chips. Purchased many years ago from a man who cleaned out old buildings when they were sold or about to be demolished.

Melmac 2 Branchell Open Handled Salad Bowls 50s Vintage MelmacHere are 2 vintage Branchell salad bowls designed by K. LaMoyne. It's a neat look with the handle incorporated into the curve of the rim. Both have a nice speckling in the color. One is turquoise and the other is coral. They measure 6-3/8" in diameter x 1.5" high. The surface of the turquoise bowl has dulled somewhat from use. It has some scratches on the inside and a tiny dark mark which is an indentation in the surface. There are 5 white pin holes in the surface on the underside near the foot. The coral bowl is in better condition with just a few light signs of use. It is still quite shiny. The style is really nice. I think they are salad bowls because I had a very large one in the same style... but they would be great for soup or chili too.

When held sideways to the light you can see a few short scratches and a couple of gray silverware marks... nothing real deep, dark or bad but it has been used. Red Wing Pottery Bob White 1966 Tall Ice Lip Pitcher 14"This tall pitcher was made by Red Wing Pottery in their most popular pattern called Bob White. All of Red Wing's dinnerware patterns were hand painted. Bob White was introduced in 1966, but the vast number of cheaper imported dishes in the aftermath of World War II, finally forced them out of business. Even this popular pattern couldn't save them and they closed their doors in 1967. It's 14-1/8" high and 6" diameter at the belly. Ice lip. Large comfortable handle. Red Wing called it a water pitcher but it would be great for ice tea and sangria. Marked on base: RED WING U.S.A. It's in very good condition... no chips, cracks, or repairs. Roseville Raymor SUGAR BOWL Modernist Eames Era SeibelHere is a great looking modern stoneware sugar bowl (#157) in the Raymor pattern designed by Ben Seibel for Roseville in 1952. Vintage advertising published in the Huxford books reads: "At last-- the durability of stoneware... the delicacy of china! Raymor Modern Stoneware brings you the enchantment of modern sculptured forms... the beauty of exquisitely textured glazes.. in a wonderfully practical warm-in, bake-in, serve-in, hand-crafted dinnerware service. For your table, mix-or-match the delightful colors created by Roseville Pottery--Autumn Brown, Avocado Green, Terrra Cotta, Beach Gray, Contemporary White." The former owner must have followed the mix and match idea. The lid is a speckled brownish orangey color which must be Autumn Brown... it's not orangey enough for Terra Cotta. I'm not sure about the bowl... it might be Contemporary White... but it's a tannish color... I've never seen Beach Gray before... but I don't think this is a cool enough shade to be considered gray. It's in very good condition. From an estate sale.

Stetson- 6 Stetson Handpainted Turquoise Leaf Berry Bowls 1940'sHere are 6 berry bowls from the Stetson Pottery Company. I don't know the name of the pattern but they feature beautiful handpainted brushwork... turquoise and black leaves with an almost Oriental feel to their simplicity. 5.25" x 1-3/8". The berry bowls are not marked but other larger items in the set are marked with green underglaze stamp: An ovenproof Stetson Creation hand painted underglaze copyright. We're offering more pieces from this set in our other auctions this week. There are some minor scratches in the bottom areas but they're basically in very good condition. According to my old American Dinnerware book by Jo Cunningham, Joe Stetson's pottery produced only decal work until sometime in 1946 or 1947 when he brought in decorators from Red Wing and Southern Potteries (Blue Ridge) and began to produce only handpainted wares. This lasted for only 2 or 3 years and they went back to decorating with decals again. That would mean this set was produced sometime between 1946 and 1950, making it quite rare. 15s12

Wells 2 Wells Art Glaze Pottery-Platter-9" Plate-Pumpkin BrwnHere are a couple of great finds... 2 rare Wells Art Glaze pottery pieces made by Homer Laughlin Company from 1930 to 1935. One is an 11.5" oval platter. The other is a 9" plate. Both are in the rust glaze which is a lovely speckled pumpkin pie orange brown with a great studio pottery look. The glaze looks somewhat different on each of the pieces. The platter is lighter in color; the plate is more orangey... but that was what they were trying to do with this line... make pottery that looked handmade by potters, unique, no 2 exactly alike, special! The platter has 2 miniscule glazed over bumps and a tiny glaze filled bubble that occurred in the firing. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The plate has a miniscule pin point sized flea bite on the underside of the rim. It is almost imperceptible. It is in excellent condition otherwise, no cracks, large chips, or repairs.
