Picture1 BOB NATALINI Blinking Beetle Art Plastic Necklace-1970s

This incredible, one of a kind, blinking beetle necklace was made by artist-craftsman-entomologist-musician, Bob Natalini. He has been a pioneer in the art jewelry field, developing sophisticated techniques for working with cast resins in combination with metals and other materials and incorporating electronics, lights, movement, sound and music into his pieces.

In this wonderful piece, a jewel-tone irridescent beetle is captured forever inside the clear cast polyester resin. A red LED diode is imbedded in the beetle's back and connected to visable electronic circuitry incorporated as design elements within the piece. The steel gray area at bottom right houses a small battery (round watch type) that causes the LED to blink... like the beetle's heartbeat. Watch our animated photo to see the LED blink on and off! A small opening in the back allows the battery to be pushed out slightly (when not in use) or completely (for changing). 2.25" wide x 1.75" high x 1/2" thick. Matching yellow half capsule shaped beads terminate each end of the silver rattail chain. Necklace, not including beetle part, is 16" long. Unusual, but very functional, clasp. The necklace was made in 1977. It is signed and dated on the back. Some light scratches on back could be buffed out. It is in very good condition.

Bob's work has been shown in many galleries and museums and written about in books on art and jewelry. This necklace has been shown in several museums that we know of: The Philadelphia Art Museum and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian. This piece is photographed on page 61 of the 1984 book "Art Plastic" by Andrea DiNoto. We have loved owning it. I loved wearing it but I didn't wear it often... we mostly enjoyed it as a piece of art and just looked at it. You will be the center of attention when you wear it! If you wear it to a gathering of artists and/or craftsmen, they will know who made it. A wonderful work of art! You will never see another like it!

PictureAlan Willoughby Studio Pottery Porcelain Casserole 70's

I believe this vintage porcelain casserole was made by Alan Willoughby, a studio potter acquaintance who has lived and worked here in southern NJ since we began potting in 1970. It's signed AW and since we purchased a group of pottery that he made back in the 70's, I feel pretty sure it's his. He is still potting and showing his works in various galleries and shows, although his more recent work is wood fired. He is also director of Perkins Center for the Arts in Moorestown, NJ.

The casserole is hand thrown porcelain with thrown finial handle and applied strip handles. Albany slip type glaze over a honey colored gloss was reduction fired. It is 6" high, 6.25" in diameter, 7-7/8" wide at handles and holds about 1 quart. In excellent condition. I never used it in the oven... just for serving.

PictureAmulet Primitive Magic Rock Amulet Charm 60's Vintage Necklace

Here's a 1960's vintage artist made primitive rock amulet necklace that we bought from a craft store in the late 60's or early 70's. The rock is held with metal, wrapped with fine cording, and suspended from a leather thong. The pendant is 1.5" long x 2" wide. Cord is 25" long. It looks like it should have magical powers... and maybe it does! It's in very good condition.

PictureArtist Craftsman Hand Forged Iron Griddle 70's Vintage

Wonderful hand forged iron griddle was made by an artist craftsman whose name I do not recall. We purchased it new in the early 1970's from the craft shop at Peter's Valley, a craft colony and school in Layton, located in the Northwestern tip of New Jersey, in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. It is operated in cooperation with the National Park Service.

\r\rIt has a twisted riveted 8" long handle riveted on the corner of a large 12" square with slightly upturned sides. The surface was hand hammered while the iron was red hot. The surface is slightly irregular but it shows the handmade quality and is smooth enough for its purpose. It has been a great piece to use and to look at. Lots of room for pancakes, eggs and omlets, hamburgers, etc. We've used it for 30 years. It has held up well and is in very good condition, with many years of use and enjoyment still to be had from it.

PictureArtist Signed Stoneware Art Pottery Vase Copper Glaze

Impressive art pottery vase is wheel thrown and altered with stylistic nods to tea ceremony vessels and Peter Voulkos' teachings. It's reduction fired white stoneware with a copper green glaze turning to copper red/purple where it was starved for oxygen. Sprinkling of black speckles on horizontal rim. Signed with artist's impressed stamp in all lower case letters: m.K. head. 9" high. 10" in diameter. Purchased from an estate sale. Previous owner has put protective pads on the foot. We left them there, but they are stick ons and easily removeable. The pot is in excellent condition.

PictureBelgium, Art Pottery Vintage Pitcher Flammand Belgium Crystaline

Beautiful art pottery pitcher is marked on underside: 06/11 Flamand Belgium JWCo (or JVVCo depending on your interpretation). It has a wonderful runny studio pottery type of glaze... which could be wood fired or fired with ash and it seems to be developing a bit of crystaline structure in the glaze. It has an Art Nouveau feel to it with the branch-like handle going down into raised root designs around the lower portion. There are some older Royal Doulton jugs that are glazed in a similar manner. This pot is just great! 6.5" high at handle tip. 4" diameter at widest point. In excellent condition.

PictureBetty Woodman Porcelain Art Pottery Cup 70s Copper Red 4

This wonderful porcelain cup was made by well known potter, sculptor, teacher, Betty Woodman. This is a piece of her earlier, more functional work... We purchased a group of them in the mid 1970's from a craft gallery in Haddonfield, NJ, called By Hand. Wheel thrown and altered with indents. Handpainted green brush stokes with pale blushes of copper red (flowers) near the green (leaves). It's 3-1/8" high x 5" diameter at rim where it is slightly oval. They all originally had saucers that went with them but I haven't been able to find the saucer that went with this one. None of the cups were marked. The saucers were all impressed: WOODMAN, around the outside of the foot, but those of you who are familiar with her work will recognize these pieces. Spiral shell cutoff mark on base. There is a pale hairline (1.5" long) starting at the rim near one of the green brush strokes on the outside, when handle is positioned on the right. It shows more on the inside than the outside. It's in very good condition otherwise. We rarely used it... and not for coffee or tea... mostly for fruit and yogurt. Betty has been quoted as saying, "It makes good sense to use clay for pots, vases, pitchers, and platters, but I like to have things both ways.ÊI make things that could be functional, but I really want them to be considered works of art."

Woodman studied at Alfred, 1948-1950. She taught at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Her work has been shown and collected internationally. The Metropolitan Museum in New York presented a retrospective of her work in June 2006.

Handpainted with blue slashes and green dots of various sizes. It's 2-7/8" high x 5" diameter at rim. There are 2 lightly stained pale tan hairlines (1 is 1.25" long, the other is 1.75" long) starting at the rim near the handle when handle is positioned on the left. Both show up on the inside and the outside. The longer line has another line crossing it which only appears on the outside. There are a few crackles in the thick glaze inside bottom center. It's in very good condition otherwise. We rarely used it... and not for coffee or tea... mostly for fruit and yogurt. It doesn't sit quite flat and may be a little tipsy for hot beverages. Betty has been quoted as saying, "It makes good sense to use clay for pots, vases, pitchers, and platters, but I like to have things both ways.ÊI make things that could be functional, but I really want them to be considered works of art."

PictureBig Slabbed Art Pottery Landscape Vase Impressed Leaves

This great looking art pottery vase was hand built by rolling out and joining slabs of clay. Usually rolled out on a strong material like canvas or burlap, you can see some of the material texture in the background. Incorporates clays of different colors, impressed leaves that look like trees in this scale, incised grasses, blue glaze in the sky, top rim cut to resemble clouds... a really neat piece! Both sides are similar but different. 12.5" high x 9" wide x 5" front to back. There is no signature that I can see unless there's a secret signing in the pattern of the grasses. Excellent condition... no chips, cracks or repairs. Purchased from an estate sale. If you know who made it and you'd like to share, we'd be happy to hear from you.

PictureBrigita Fuhrmann Artist Huge Bobbin Lace Masterwork Art

This wonderful bobbin lace is an enormous, time consuming effort... a one of a kind master work by artist, Brigita Fuhrmann, author of the definitive 1976 book on the subject: Bobbin Lace: An Illustrated Guide to Traditional and Contemporary Techniques. Bill got to know Brigita when he studied woodworking and design with her husband, Bill Fuhrmann, in the mid sixties. They became friends and Bill acquired this fantastic lace from Brigita in 1967. It has been in our collection of art ever since. It measures 55" long x 13" wide. She has worked it onto a metal rod frame which allows it to be supported and hung on the wall as a painting would be hung. It protrudes from the wall for 2" on this frame. I believe it is made of natural linen. One strand has broken between the 4th and 5th rows from the top on the upper right side. I think this could be repaired by someone who knows what they are doing. It is in very good condition otherwise.

Brigita was born in Czechoslovakia. Her family was artistic and she began studying art... drawing and painting... at an early age. After coming to the US, she studied at Cranbrook Academy of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, Savannah College of Art and Design, and at UMass Dartmouth.ÊShe has been painting in recent years and has exhibited her works all over the world. She lives in New England with her husband.

PictureCampbell Art Pottery Salt & Pepper Shakers B Campbell Wow Glaze

Here's a wonderful pair of porcelain or white stoneware hand made art pottery salt and pepper shakers. Fabulous shapes. Magical fluid glaze. They are not signed... most salt & peppers aren't as there isn't enough room on their tiny bases... but we have owned pottery with extremely similar glazes... works by well known potter, Bill Campbell, of Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania. The shakers are beautiful. 4.5" high with rubber stoppers intact. A great, useful addition to your pottery collection... and fun to feel too! They are in excellent condition. We are very appreciative for contact from the Sales & Customer Service Representative of Bill Campbell Pottery. She has assured us that these shakers were indeed made by him in the mid 1990's. She also said they are no longer being made.

PictureHuge Art Pottery Clay Sculpture RISD Jackie Rice 1970's

We purchased this wonderful art pottery clay sculpture at a juried show at the University of Pennsylvania sometime in the 1970's. Unfortunately we lost all of our receipts and records of shows we attended in a natural disaster beyond our control. We know the piece was made by someone at or with connections to Rhode Island School of Design. What we can't remember is if it was made by Jacqueline Rice (teacher of pottery at RISD) or someone who studied with her. It's a great piece... made with thick logs of peachy terra cotta color clay with indentations poked by the artist's fingers, inlaid with coils of flattened yellow and blue clay that look like boomerangs. 32.75" high. Approximately 14" x 14" at the base. Very heavy. Unsigned. In excellent condition.

PictureJames Rothrock Painterly Art Pottery Porcelain Pitcher

This wonderful porcelain pitcher was made by James Rothrock, an American artist potter. It is not signed with his name, but the style of watercolor-like painted underglaze art work is his visual signature. We made our living as studio potters for 14 years back in the 1970's and 80's. We collected a lot of pottery from other potters and purchased serveral pieces made by Rothrock from galleries back then... so we are familiar with his work. I guarantee that this piece was made by him. We purchased this piece recently from an estate sale. It's 5.5" high x 4" in diameter at the base, 5" wide from spout to handle. Exterior is matt finish, painted with underglaze stains and oxides. The interior is glazed in a glossy clear glaze so it can be used with juice, milk, etc. and be cleaned easily. It's in excellent condition.

On-line resources say that Rothrock was born in 1946. Graduated from Purdue University in 1969. He worked in ceramics labs at the University of Wisconsin and Millersville State College. He has maintained his own pottery studio and has been a design consultant in cast porcelain. He has been exhibiting his work since 1976 in many galleries on both coasts. He is represented in the Newark Art Museum's permanent collection: Great Pots: Contemporary Ceramics from Function to Fantasy. Not only are his works beautiful and useful, they have become collectible too, as mid-century crafts works are more sought after than ever before. His works have been re-sold through Rago Arts Auction for more than their original price.

PictureJulie Shaw Jewelry Artist Pisces Rainbow Zodiac Pin 70s

This unusual Pisces pin was hand formed by Michigan artist-jeweler, Julie Shaw. We bought it directly from her when she was showing her work at a professional craft show in New Jersey in the late 1970's/early 1980's. A printed color picture of a stained glass window showing the 2 Pisces fish swimming in opposite directions and a watercolor drawing of a rainbow are sandwiched between an orange plexiglass background and a transparent plexiglass picture frame front. The 2 sheets are fastened together with stainless steel rivets. It's 1-7/8" high x 1-3/8" wide. The pin back is glued in place. She has engraved the back with her signature: Julie Shaw. Some pale white marks are visable in the upper right quadrant which probably indicate that the paper inside has absorbed some moisture over time. There are 3 pin point sized flakes on back orange edge that occurred when the piece was sawed. It's in good condition otherwise.

PictureLair Kirby's Mill Pottery Stoneware Wine Carafe & 2 Goblets

Here is a vintage stoneware pottery wine set with carafe and 2 tall goblets. They were made by potters Bill & Kathy Lair of Kirby's Mill Pottery in Medford, New Jersey, circa 1971-1986, (that's us). They are wheel thrown and reduction fired in a gas kiln. The carafe has our unique handle designed in 1972 and is signed on the base: The Lairs Medford, N.J. This is an earlier signature. The carafe is 9" high. The goblets are 7.5" high. Stoneware is sturdy, food safe, no leads are used, easy to clean, dishwasher safe. This set with hand painted butterfly flower design was originally sold from our studio sometime between 1971 and 1986. We purchased it recently from a local estate sale so it has been used. There are several chips on the bases that occurred during the making, because, despite the use of kiln wash, the high fired ware (2300 degrees) often partially stuck to the kiln shelf and bits pulled off of the pot when it was taken from the kiln. There is a miniscule flake at the rim of the carafe which has occurred since the firing. They are in very good condition otherwise.

PictureLair Signed Art Pottery Stoneware Vase 1970's Vintage

Here's a great looking vintage art pottery vase made in our studio by Bill in the 1970's, during our 14 year career (1972-1986) as studio potters. We made functional ware to earn a living, but also made semi-functional art pottery and sculpture... our first love being art. We both graduated from college with art and teaching degrees, taught art for a number of years, and then began the pottery in 1972. We have shown our work in galleries and museum shows in the Northeast including the Philadelphia Art Alliance, the Philadelphia Civic Center Craft Show, Philadelphia Museum Craft Show, Spirit of the Earth Gallery in New Hope, Pa., various New Jersey Designer Craftsmen Shows, and Northeast Craft Fair at Rhinebeck.

This piece is wheel thrown and altered, reduction fired stoneware with a barium matt glaze over Albany slip. It is 8.75" high x 6.5" at the widest point. Impress signed LAIR. (my interpretation only :-) 8-3/8" high. Signed in the glaze at bottom edge: H.L. S?ARS (could be Stars or Spars) There's a pin point sized dot of missing purple glaze near the blue rabbit. Inside at the very bottom is a big burst air bubble in the glaze or maybe it was the way it was thrown on the potter's wheel. There is more pot with glaze on in under the bubble so all is glazed. PictureSigned Porcelain Bowl 1970's Vintage Art Pottery

Great looking porcelain art pottery bowl was hand thrown on the potter's wheel and reduction fired. Drips and dips of copper red and cobalt blue glaze. The red is thick and has run down the bowl with wonderful hare's fur effect. It's quite thick at the inside bottom and has crackled a bit from the thickness which you can see if you hold it sideways to the light. It's in extremely good condition otherwise. 3.75" high x 7-3/8" diameter at rim. We purchased back in the 1970's at a craft show or gallery. It's signed on the base with an incised symbol but I don't remember who made it and as all of records of purchases and shows we attended were lost in a natural disaster beyond our control, I no longer have any way to find out.

PictureSpacecraft 2 Phallic Star Rattles Weird Pottery c 1978

Here are 2 phallic shaped rattles, white with gold lustre stars, made by Space Craft, 2 artist-potters from Philadelphia, PA, in 1978. We purchased them directly from Spacecraft when we were both showing our work at the Philadelphia Craft Show that year. They have dried fired clay inside the closed form that rattles when you shake them. Some of the gold has worn off over the years... too many friends loved shaking them at parties ;-) They're 4.75" long end to end. In very good condition with exception noted.

PictureTwo 2 Art Pottery Cobalt Blue Trinket Box & Copper Red Jar

Here are 2 pieces of art pottery. Both were made within the last 30 years. Both were hand thrown on the potters wheel and altered or added to.

  • The taller piece is a little white stoneware jar glazed with a copper glaze. It is partly green with a section of copper red which developed in the reduction atmosphere in which it was fired. 3" high. There's a chip under the rim of the lid which can't be seen when the lid is in place. It's in very good condition otherwise. We purchased this piece many years ago (before 1980) probably from a craft show or gallery. I can't remember the name of the potter who made it and it isn't signed. Only the shell-like wire pattern can be seen on the base where it was "cut from the hump". (Many small pieces were often thrown in succession from one large hump of clay and cut off when they were finished... a technique used by production potters.)
  • The broader piece is made of porcelain. The bottom is glazed with a glossy cobalt blue crackle glaze... the interior is white with a trailed line and droplets of cobalt. The lid is glazed with a gun metal gray semi-matt with an extruded fan-like handle. It measures 2.5" high x 3.5" in diameter. It's in excellent condition. It could be used as a trinket or ring box but it's just beautiful to look at even if you don't put anything in it. It's signed but I can't decipher it. We purchased this one from an estate sale a few years ago so don't know the name of the potter.
