This child's bowl and plate were hand painted, probably in 1922, as indicated by the date on the bottom of the plate. Well executed barnyard scenes show roosters, hens and chicks... one chick has just hatched from the egg. Both are signed with the artist's initials: KBC. Bottom of plate is inscribed: John S. Collins July 2, 1922, probably the birthdate of the child for whom this set was painted. There are many fine line scratches in the bottom white areas of both from utensils. The bowl has a small 1/4" chip on the underside of the rim. The paintings are still in very good condition. An interesting addition to your collection of vintage kiddieware.

Wonderful moderne style vintage tea set for children and doll tea parties is porcelain with a blue glossy glaze with studio pottery type variations. Sets with this grouping of pieces, on trays of this configuration, are pictured in my book of antique Children's Dishes by the Whitmayers. They are called Cabaret Sets and all were made in Germany. None of these pieces have any markings except possibly one saucer. It has a darker blue V-like shape that's not recognizable and it may just be an odd variation in the blue glaze. The set consists of 10 pieces: teapot with lid, creamer and sugar bowl with lid, 2 cups each with a saucer, all sitting on a 5 lobed flower-like tray. The tray measures about 8" across and the teapot is 3" high to give you an idea of the size of it. Excellent condition. Purchased from an estate sale.

This wonderful 1940's vintage porcelain dinnerware with fancy exotic peacock pattern is signed by Epiag of Czechoslovakia. The pattern is called Radjah (Rajah... a king or prince). Marked on underside with arm and sword logo, maker, country, pattern name, and various numbers. Offered here are one cup and saucer along with 4 small plates (6-5/16") for bread & butter or dessert. The cup & saucer show some wear to gold band and on handle of cup. They are in very good condition otherwise.

The 4 plates are included even though they have some damage because, if you're collecting this pattern, you know how hard it is to find and might appreciate these pieces even if they aren't perfect. They look good from the top with slight wear to gold bands and blue curlycues at the base of the peacock designs where it enters the food surface. Two have light hairlines which are more visable from the underside than the top. One runs from rim to foot ring, the other is half that size starting at rim. A third has a 1/4" chip under the rim, visable from bottom but not the top. Purchased from an estate sale.

Here are 3 pieces of English Ironstone purchased together from one estate sale. Although they aren't the same company or pattern, they look real good together with brown patterns that look like shamrocks or clover and might make a nice breakfast trio... cup and saucer, long octagonal plate perfect for English muffins, bagel... even an egg or two. Pretty porcelain piece from pre-WWII Germany is handpainted with watercolor-like pastel roses and lots of gold trim. This wonderful hand painted vase is the biggest work of china painting (china decorating) that I have ever seen. It's 15.5" high. The gold lustre is fired on glaze. The roses, peonies, dogwood, and other flowers are hand painted directly on the surface using the china as a canvas. This was a technique that became popular in the United States about 1880 and lasting into the early 20th century. This vase is not signed... many were not; some were marked with initials only... so all I can tell you about it is that we purchased it at an estate sale from a woman in her 70's or 80's who was selling the contents of her sister's home. There were many vintage items as would have been acummulated by someone of that age. When I asked about the vase, she said her sister liked to buy antiques. There are a few cork table protectors on the underside. The vase is in excellent condition and a real beauty!

Here is a vintage Japanese tea set circa late 1940's - early 1950's. There are 12 pieces: a tall beverage pot with lid, 5 cups and 5 saucers. ĘThe pot is probably intended for coffee or hot chocolate but could also be used for tea. Pot is 9.5" high x 5.25" diameter at the base. Cups are 2-7/8" high. Saucers are 5" diameter. Intricate handpainted picture designs show geishas or ladies in kimonos on dock feeding fish... carp or koi. There are pink water lilies, hanging vines with pink flowers, paper lanterns, bamboo blinds, mountains... maybe Mt Fuji in background, village with houses, sampans, etc. Large urn or lantern on base on dock with ladies. Ornate handles. Lots of red and pink. Gold lustre in red borders and on pictures. The red glaze on handles and border trim was hand painted. It has thick areas where it overlaps or drips. There are a few spots where it is thin and is not as red. There are a couple spots where it has crawled slightly (kiln too cold or glaze reacting to oil from glazers fingers). There are also some stray spots of red inside the tops of the cups. These occurred during the manufacturing. One cup has X hairline on base outside but not inside and that saucer has a fine 1/2" hairline on underside at rim but not on top. The rest are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, repairs, stai or scratches. It looks as if it has never been used... maybe it was a cabinet piece used for display only. Purchased from an estate sale.

This porcelain tea or demi-tasse coffee set was purchased from an estate sale. It appears to be new and un-used in its original box. There are 6 cups, 6 saucers, 6 spoons, and a caddy with wrapped rattan handle. Some of the designs include: cherry trees, bamboo, Oriental houses, mountains, moon bridge, etc. The cups have pictures in the bases, the face of an Oriental woman or geisha, which can be seen if you hold the cup to the light and look at the underside. The pictures, called lithophanes, are created by the variation in thickness of the porcelain clay. The cardboard box is covered with black and white decorative paper. All the black areas are furry feeling. The box is 16.5" x 11" x 4.5" high. Everything is in excellent condition.

Here are 3 vintage pieces of Japanese lustreware with a cherry blossom theme.

• 2 desert size plates (7.25") - Deep purple-blue lustrous background has a beautiful cherry tree branch with 3 blossoms and flower buds, and a flying yellow bird all hand painted in a thick glaze with raised texture. You can feel the painting! Red underglaze stamp mark with elephant's head logo and Made in Japan. One plate is lighter blue than the other. It has a small spot where the blue is worn to the left side of the branch. There are light lines (color loss) and other signs of use on the surface which show up more in some lights than others. There are no chips, cracks or repairs. They have a great aesthetic quality... very stylized. They are beauties!
• Lidded jar with side lugs and wrapped rattan or bamboo handle is lustrous blue and tan striped on sides with cherry blossoms on the lid. The jar has 4 little petal-like ears at the rim. The mark is a T with leaf wreath logo in red underglaze stamp on base. Slight wear to gold lustre spot on lid handle. There are dark dots at the inside rim which come from specks of iron in the clay body. This occurred during the manufacturing and won't hurt anything. 4" diameter x 1.75" high; 4-1/8" high to top of handle. In very good condition.

Vintage majolica tureen-style compote has a lid with cherry finial and a ladle with cherries and leaves on the handle. Cherries and other fruits are in raised bas relief on one side of the compote to idicate its use. 6.5" high x 6" wide at the handles, 4-5/8" in diameter. Ladle is 5.5" long. Unglazed inner rim and edge of lid are not glazed indicating that the lid was fired in place. Overall network of fine crackles. Unfortunately, there's a rim chip at the back of the compote measuring 1/2" long by 1/4" high... but it's still a nice looking piece. Purchased from an estate sale.

Vintage teapot with Rooster and Roses designs similar to those made by Py and Ucagco but there are no marks or stickers on this one. The wrought iron wrapped curley handle like those used on stove lifters to disapate the heat so you won't burn your hand is an unusual feature. 5.75" to top of finial on lid. 8.75" to top of handle. There's a bit of rusty color from the handle on the inside of the holes where the handle goes through which I didn't try to clean. The teapot sits up on 3 little feet.
