Here are 2 old boxes. I think both of them are made of wood. One is a lathed barrel shape with ribbed ornamentation. The top begins just under the top group of ridges. It fits snug but pulls off easily. 3.25' high x 2" diameter. It's in very good condition.

The other has a laquered finish. It is very thick and appears to be wood with lacquer but it might be all lacquer... it's hard to know. The lid appears to be set on 2 pivot points. The box is 3.75" x 2" and 1.25" high. It might have been intended to hold stamps or maybe a stone or Japanese inking block. Lid fits very tightly. It is shaped to have a tab handle in the front. Lacquer is worn along the edges there and under the handle. Some scratching on base. It's in good condition otherwise. Both were purchased from estate sales.

Great looking 1940's vintage green plastic box is predominantly speckled with various shades of green, but there are also a few dots of red, orange, yellow, blue, white and black scattered among the greens. Raised Art Deco line designs both inside and out: a sconce-like upside-down Eiffel tower shape with rectangles on top of the lid; inside the lid are concentric circles in center and corners with double line border. Marked on the underside with conjoined AB-7. Metal pin hinges. Top inside ridge is thinner than the rest of the box. It acts as a stop for the lid. The 2 back corners of this ridge have broken off. This is on the inside back and not noticeable when the box is closed. It does not test positive for bakelite. I pin tested it in an unobtrusive spot. It has a very sharp acrid odor that I'm not familiar with but it can be identified by a more scientific type than me from the smell. It is not a more contemporary plastic such as acrylic or lucite (I'm familiar with those smells). 1-7/8" high x 6-7/16" x 3-3/16". It's in very good condition with exceptions noted. This has been in my own collection for about 25 years. I originally purchased it from an estate sale.

This vintage cardboard box is shaped like a book. The book's cover (lid) is a mirrored Victorian print entitled Le Lever which translates as The Rising. It depicts 3 women in Victorian garb: the mistress waking up and yawning; the servants, one drawing back the heavy drapes surrounding the bed, the other taking her hand and holding her slippers. Page edges of the book are flower printed paper, back is gold paper, spine is black. The box measures approximately 8.5" x 5.5" x 2.5". It shows some wear... most noticeable are: a break in paper at page edge corner, some loss of mirror silvering shows as small dark dots. It's a neat old piece and included are 5 vintage hankies that were inside when I purchased it from an estate sale.

Here are 2 beautiful dragonfly fantasy items for the vanity... a ring box and round picture frame. The dragonfiles are inset with rhinestones of different colors and sizes. Shimmery lilac enamel on bottom of ring box and surrounding the photo area in the frames. Leaves are dark green with shimmers of silver. Frame is 5" high with picture opening of 2.5" diameter. Fantastic vintage celluloid case once held a medallion, icon or photo of some sort as evidenced by the dried glue on the burgundy velvet inside. The case is has 2 hinged doors lined with yellow satiny material with a curved black disc closure that clicks shut over a translucent amber button. Bottom is black with an impressed oval logo that might be the outline of a bird and the initials E.C. under the ground line. We'll try to get a picture of that but it might be difficult. The celluloid from which the doors are made is wonderful! It is visually textural with swirls of pale colors: ivory, orange, yellow, and lavender, and covered entirely with a network of white lacy or mesh-like lines. I've rarely seen such great looking celluloid except in the laminated jewelry of Lea Stein. Black back outside has some scratches in the surface but everything else is in very good condition. 3" x 2-3/8" x 3/4". Purchased from an estate sale about 30 years ago. Has been in my collection ever since.

• Music box made of transparent turquoise plastic has a raised cupid holding bow and arrow on the lid inside a crescent moon with stars. It once held a perfume bottle (brand is unknown to me) as the insert to hold it is still inside. It is easily lifted out to make use of the space. Great for trinkets, jewels, watch box on bureau or vanity. It plays Somewhere Over the Rainbow. 2-1/8" high x 4.5" x 3.75".

Black and silver man's jewelry box for cufflinks, watches, tie bars, etc. has enameled crest for the National War College with surrounding laurel wreath. 6.75" x 3.75" x 1.25" A couple dots of glue near top of wreath occurred during manufacturing. In very good condition.

This ornate cast metal casket style trinket or jewel box has a hinged lid with a crouching lion figure on top. It sits up off table top on 4 large lion paws. 2.75" high x 5-1/8" x 2-3/8". Hinges are in good shape. No breaks to the casting. It's in very good condition structurally. It has been painted several times as can be seen on the underside. This vintage powder box has a heavy bas relief pictorial lid showing a country scene with lovers sitting in a leafy glade near a waterfall or dam with their dog. He appears to be showing her how to play the flute. Sides are decorated with a pattern of pillars, spirals, and a garland of leaves and fruits. The box is very heavy grayish metal, probably pewter or other white metal. It has a removeable glass liner. Size is 4.5" in diameter and 1-5/8" high. It has some scratches on the underside as might be expected. Very good condition. No damage to glass or metal. Purchased from an estate sale.

This wonderful Russian lacquerware box is hand painted with a man in a moon shaped sleigh being pulled by 3 fanciful horses through a magical forest. It is signed in gold with artist's name, etc. along bottom edge of lid in Russian. (Sorry I can't translate) The box has 2 tiers. Hinged lid covers top section which also lifts up to reveal a larger section underneath the first. 3.5" high. Rectangle is 4-3/8" x 3" at belly. Red interior of both sections. Lots of gold. Here's a neat old brass box that seems to be fabricated by hand as the joints are soldered and the sides are pieced. Top, front and back are fluted with repeating indented scalloped furrows and raised ridges... the indents are about the size used on pen trays. It makes a great pattern. The box measures 7-7/8" x 4.75" x 2" high. Piano hinges. One side has a number 35 stamped into the lid and also into the base, one above the other. There are old felt circles on the base. I haven't tried to polish it because some folks prefer the aged patina. It's in very good condition. Purchased from an estate sale.

Here is an old copper box with the National Coat of Arms of Chile raised in the center of the lid. The motto: Por La Razon O La Fuerza (By Reason or Force), used on Chilean currency since 1818, is inscribed on the banner. Original interpretation of the motto was that reason, or the law, was primary, but if violated, reason would be upheld with force. A bill has been pending in the Chilean Senate since 2004 to change the motto to the less aggressive sounding "By the force of reason". This box is marked on base with the maker's mark: A rooster and the words Gallo M. M. Chile. 4" x 3" x 1-7/8" high. The copper had darkened with time and the lid had black stuff on it from being stored in an old garage. When I washed it, some of the dark oxidation came off too so I polished the top but not the rest of the box. There is a tiny dent and still some spotting on the lid. In good condition otherwise.12s6
